The United States Sugar Corporation, more commonly known as US Sugar, is a privately owned agricultural business that farms more than 330,000 acres of land in south central Florida. Founded in 1931, US Sugar operates a 120-mile railroad to transport raw sugar cane from the farms to a processing plant in Clewiston, the self-described sweetest town in America. US Sugar is the only sugar company in the United States that ships sugar cane by rail. Sugar cane harvesting take place primarily between October and May each year. The cane is transportd to the processing plant using a fleet of nearly eight hundred specially-built railroad cars which are designed to be unloaded when tipped over out of a large, hinged side door. These freight cars are in captive service and do not get interchanged with other railroads. In addition to freight operations, US Sugar also operates passender excursions on their tracks using a former Florida East Coast Railway 4-6-2 steam engine. |
